It’s been way too long since I’ve posted, and the main reason had to do with my back injury. Early April until recently, I’ve been dealing with two herniated discs and a tear in my lower back. I’m writing this as I lay in our Alexandria, Virginia AirBnB — grateful for the ability to walk without crutches anymore and the opportunity to travel again!
Alex, Linley and our dear friends and family made my recovery process so much better — and I tried celebrating the small wins and good moments with great people.

I look forward to sharing more about our East coast adventures in the coming weeks. ☺️
It’s nice to see you posting on your blog again, Cate. What a year it’s been for me and my wife—I don’t even know where to begin. This year, my mom had a stroke and was in the hospital for a short time. After that, she decided to have a knee replacement surgery. Post-surgery, she refused to do any of the required exercises, so my wife and I had to temporarily place her in a nursing home for four months.
Over the July 4th holiday, she signed herself out of the nursing home and essentially showed up at our doorstep here in Vermont. She fell while at our house, requiring me to pick her back up and put her in her wheelchair with the help of a local friend. She then decided to sign over the deed to my childhood home in NYC, which I’ve since listed for sale. My mom is now being transferred to a new nursing facility, though I doubt that she will ever leave that facility.
Yesterday, my mom told me that I’m the only queer in the family and that nobody approves of me and my wife being in a female/female marriage, including her. It’s been a bad year for us, but things are looking up.
Hope you feel better soon; please let us know if you’re ever in Vermont.
Your friends,
Thomas & Amelia 🙂

Oh my goodness… I’m so sorry to hear ALL of this! I, too, know people who refuse proper treatment and it’s disheartening, frustrating and at times angering to see. I’m incredibly sorry you and your wife had to deal with this — and then some!
I’m especially saddened and sorry to hear about the cruel things your mom said. I’m impressed with how resilient you’ve had to be your entire life and am proud of you for handling all this with such grace. 💛
I hope things get better for you and your wife this year, and will definitely let you know when we’re in Vermont! We’ll be in upstate NY every year, so hopefully next year we can head your way 🤞
